History

The original 12th-century mosque of the Atabeys architectural complex was destroyed at the end of the 18th century, and a smaller Friday mosque was built 300 metres to the north-west. This mosque was restored in 1894 with the support of Khayrul-Haj Muhammad Jafar agha of Nakhchivan, and throughout the Soviet period it was the only mosque in Nakhchivan to remain continuously in service despite the promotion of atheism. It was restored again in 2007 by the Scientific Restoration Production Department attached to the Cabinet of Ministers of the Nakhchivan Autonomous Republic.
