History

The original building, commissioned by the Shirvanshah Farrukhzad II in 1281, was destroyed in 1936 during the Soviet period and rebuilt between 1994 and 1999 on the initiative of Heydar Aliyev. Incorporating the tomb of Ukeyma Khanum, daughter of Imam Musa Kazim, the complex is regarded as the country's most important Shia place of pilgrimage.
